Why Do Brides Wear Their Wedding Ring on Their Left Hand?
A wedding ring is one of the most significant symbols of your commitment to another person. Have you ever looked down at your hand and wondered, “why are wedding rings worn on the left hand?” We tracked down the origins of this exciting tradition!
In western countries, engagement rings and wedding bands are worn on the left hand, most commonly on the “ring finger,” which is the second finger from the left.
Why do we wear it on that specific finger?
The wearing of the ring on the left hand originates back thousands of years when ancient Greeks believed that the vein in your “ring finger” leads to your heart, nicknamed the “vein of love.” Later on, scholars discovered that all fingers have veins that lead to your heart, but this has not stopped newly engaged couples and newlywed couples from wearing rings on their left ring finger!
The other theory about why we wear wedding rings on our left hand is because it is convenient, as nearly 90% of the population is right-handed.
Interestingly, in some European countries and cultures, wedding rings are worn on their RIGHT hand, as it is believed that the left hand is unclean.
It is also known for some cultures to wear their wedding bands on BOTH hands. In Brazil, couples wear plain bands on their right hands and switch the rings to their left hand as they are reciting their vows. In the Jewish tradition, you may also notice that the groom places the ring on the bride’s index finger because it is her most prominent finger. Still, nowadays, the bride usually moves the band to her ring finger after the ceremony.
Whichever hand or finger you choose to show off your ring on, it still symbolizes your love and commitment to your partner, and you should wear it proudly!
