When selecting a wedding date, most couples automatically assume they should book a Saturday. There may be good reasons for that, but in our experience, there may be some really good reasons to consider a Friday as an alternative.
If a Friday is selected, as opposed to a Saturday for your reception, a chain reaction of things starts to happen.
Before we begin, let’s cover this right out of the gate – the guests will still come whether it is on a Friday or Saturday. Attendance at wine country weddings is extremely high, and regardless if the reception is on a Friday or not, attendance remains virtually the same. There are a number of differences, however, between weddings on these two days of the week.
First, guests often find its easier on a Friday. They can get airline reservations more readily earlier in the week, as well as rental cars and other transportation. Perhaps most importantly, they can get lodging reservations easier as they are booking a day earlier.
Second, since most guests arrive the day prior to the reception, the drive up on Thursday is easier as you are not competing with others coming up for “the weekend” on a Friday afternoon. To many, this alone is a deciding factor.
Third, resolves around the rehearsal dinner. In today’s world, rehearsal dinners are not the small immediate family event that used to occur. Now they have expanded to include most of the guest list, or at a minimum, those that are “traveling to get here”. As such its quite a bit easier to find a location interested in hosting your expanded group on a Thursday night as opposed to a Friday evening.
Last, the benefit of having a Friday wedding has to do with the wedding day, or more specifically, that evening. Inevitably during the reception many guests will spend time together and decide that they wish they had more time to reconnect while they are in this beautiful area. Sundays are typically not that day, as guests tend to need to make a beeline to the airport for their return trip home. Amazingly, with a Friday reception, you have just created a day for your guests to enjoy one another, as they now have all day Saturday and Saturday evening to get together and enjoy all wine country has to offer.
It is for these reasons we find that overall both guests and hosts are really happy a Friday date was selected.
Also, more Friday dates tend to be available when looking for options, and Friday’s are easier on the budget as there is typically a discount for a non-Saturday event.
